When temperatures reach their peak throughout the summer months, it can be challenging to control electric bills. However, there is still hope and a way to save some money during the summer.
Timing is crucial! Avoid running your washer, dryer, and dishwasher during the hottest time of the day as utility companies often raise gas and electricity rates. The best time is after 7 p.m. and before 11 a.m.
Aim for Energy Star symbol! In case you are replacing your old washer or refrigerator, shop ones with Energy Star program- it certifies that certain products meet energy-saving specifications. A washing machine with the Energy Star rating uses 25% less energy and 40% less water.
Keep your drapes and blinds closed. This is especially helpful on the side where the sun comes in. Another idea might be to plant trees as they will create shade and it will aesthetically look good in the backyard. Plant to have them ready for the next summer!
Avoid using an oven and grill outside. A healthy bonus….the act of cooking outside encourages activity and family time.
Insulation is the key. Heating and cooling use 50% to 70% of the energy on average. With good insulation, you can turn off your cooling appliances for a good amount of time.
A ceiling fan is helpful. It doesn't necessarily lower the temperature, but the wind creates the effect and makes you feel cooler. Also, don't leave them turned on when you leave a room as they do not help then.
